Cross-connection control and device testing

Backflow testing that keeps your drinking water on the right side of the valve

A backflow assembly is a quiet guard between your plumbing and the public supply. We test it with calibrated gauges, repair what fails, and handle the paperwork your water provider expects.

Why these devices matter

What a backflow test actually measures, and why your water provider asks for it

Water in a public main is kept under pressure so it flows toward your building. Backflow is what happens when that direction reverses. A water main break, heavy firefighting demand, or a pump inside a building can drop supply pressure or raise downstream pressure, and water that has already passed into your plumbing can be pulled or pushed back toward the street. If that water has touched lawn chemicals, boiler treatment, a submerged hose or a process line, it can contaminate the supply for everyone downstream.

A backflow prevention assembly is the mechanical answer. It sits where your plumbing connects to a potential hazard, or where your service connects to the main, and it uses spring-loaded check valves and, in some designs, a relief valve to stop reverse flow. Because those springs and rubber seats wear, most water providers in Aledo, IL require the assembly to be tested when it is installed and at regular intervals after that, commonly once a year.

The assemblies we test

Reduced pressure zone assemblies, often called RPZ or RP devices, protect high-hazard connections such as commercial boilers with chemical treatment, fire systems with additives and some irrigation systems. They have two check valves with a relief valve between them that dumps water to the outside if either check leaks. Double check valve assemblies protect lower-hazard connections and have two independent checks without the relief port. Pressure vacuum breakers are common on lawn irrigation and guard against back-siphonage. Each type has its own test procedure, and we follow the one written for that device.

How the test works

Our tester connects a differential pressure gauge to the test cocks on the assembly. With the downstream shutoff closed, the gauge reads the pressure drop across each check valve and, on an RPZ, the point at which the relief valve opens. Those readings are compared to the minimum values the standard requires. A check that holds too little pressure difference, or a relief valve that opens too late, means the device will not reliably stop reverse flow. The test takes a short time, but it does require a brief water interruption to that line, so we coordinate timing with you.

When a device fails

A failed test is common and rarely means replacing the whole assembly. Debris lodged on a check seat, a fatigued spring or a hardened rubber disc can usually be cleaned or replaced with a manufacturer repair kit. We rebuild the assembly on site when parts are available, then retest to confirm it passes before we leave. If the body is cracked, the model is discontinued or the device was installed in a location that makes it impossible to test properly, we will explain the replacement options.

Paperwork and deadlines

Your water provider usually mails a notice with a due date. We complete the test report with the device serial number, location, readings and tester certification details, and submit it through the channel your provider uses. Keep a copy for your records. Irrigation systems in homes, boiler makeup lines covered on our Boiler Repair page, and the larger assemblies found in shops and restaurants that our Commercial Plumbing Repair team services all fall under the same testing rules.

Many water authorities serving Aledo, IL send annual backflow test notices on a fixed schedule, often tied to the anniversary of the device installation or a specific month. Scheduling promptly after the notice arrives avoids late submissions and possible service interruptions. Irrigation backflow assemblies deserve special attention in spring, when systems are recharged after winter shutdown, and in fall, when they must be drained and protected from cold weather to avoid cracked bodies and damaged internal parts.

What affects the scope of a backflow visit

Device type and size

Larger RPZ assemblies on building services take more time to test and rebuild than a small irrigation vacuum breaker.

Access and location

Devices in pits, tight mechanical rooms or high on a wall may need extra setup to reach the test cocks safely.

Condition of internal parts

Heavy sediment or mineral buildup can mean a full rebuild rather than a simple cleaning.

Reasons to schedule a backflow test now

Most testing is triggered by a letter, but these situations also call for it.

A compliance notice arrived

Your water provider has set a due date. Missing it can lead to follow-up notices and, in some areas, interrupted service.

Water discharging from the relief port

An RPZ that spits or runs from its relief valve is telling you one of the checks is leaking or pressure is fluctuating.

New irrigation or boiler connection

Newly installed assemblies need an initial test before they are considered in service.

The device was moved or repaired

Any repair or relocation resets the clock. The assembly must pass a test after the work.

Discolored or odd-tasting water after a pressure event

If water quality changed after a main break or hydrant flushing, have the device checked promptly.

Winter damage to an outdoor assembly

Exposed devices can crack when temperatures drop. A cracked body cannot be tested and must be replaced.

Inside a backflow testing appointment

  1. Locate and identify

We find the assembly, record its make, model, size and serial number, and confirm the device type.

  2. Plan the shutoff

We explain how long the line will be off and make sure no one is relying on that water during the test.

  3. Gauge test

Calibrated differential gauges measure each check valve and the relief valve against required minimums.

  4. Repair and retest if needed

Failing parts are cleaned or rebuilt with approved kits, then the full test is repeated.

  5. Report and restore

Service is restored, the report is completed and filed, and you receive a copy.

Backflow testing questions from Aledo, IL property owners

Testing must be done by a tester certified under the program your water provider recognizes. Providers generally will not accept reports from uncertified individuals.

Water to the protected line is shut off briefly while the gauges are connected and readings are taken. On a main building service, that usually means a short interruption for the whole property, which we schedule with you.

An RPZ adds a relief valve between its two checks that discharges water if either check leaks, which makes it suitable for high-hazard connections. A double check has two checks only and is used where the hazard is lower.

Occasional discharge can happen during sharp pressure swings in the supply. Steady dripping or running usually means the first check is not sealing, and the device should be tested and repaired.

Most can. Replacement springs, discs and seals are sold as kits for common models, and after a rebuild the device is retested to confirm it passes.
